I had the pleasure of travelling to India again recently (April 2010), and met a lovely family from the UK. Here is their beautiful nine year old daughter, Asha, with her copy of Crackpot.
Before I left for a trip to India in April 2009, I ‘pre-launched' Crackpot, as a fund-raiser. Every cent of every book I sold that night was converted into Indian Rupees (about IRS 18,000) which I then personally hand-delivered to Dr Neela Onawale, at ‘Deep Griha', a not-for-profit and non-government funded agency that was established more than 20 years ago. (Here is a picture of me handing over my book - and a heap of cash!)
Deep Griha has been helping thousands of men, women and children who live in one of the many slums in Pune, India.
Dr Onawale was deeply grateful for the donation and promised she'd read my book. It was a lovely moment to hand that fistful of rupees over, I can tell you.
You can read more about the work Dr Onawale and her team do at: http://www.deepgriha.org/
...And here's a picture of my friend, Greg Roberts (aka Gregory David Roberts, author of Shantaram), with his very own, personally signed copy of Crackpot. I hope he likes it! I caught up with Greg, very briefly, whilst in Chennai. (I wish I'd worn a different dress!)
You can read more about Greg and Shantaram at: www.shantaram.com
(Note: Shantaram is not a children's novel!)
